1. Tackling Herculean Tasks with the Power Mac G5
.................................................
When it comes to cleaning up, the Augean stables were a cakewalk
compared to the labors undertaken by John Lowry. One of the most
sought-after film restorers in the world, Lowry takes film that due
to age, neglect, and abuse, appears beyond reclamation; removes
dirt, scratches, and blemishes; fixes tears, faded colors, and lost
detail; and makes it presentable again. Breathtaking, in fact.
No easy task, most films consist of well over 150,000 individual
frames, each one of which needs to be cleaned and/or repaired. Where
Hercules had the help of the Alpheus and Peneus rivers, Lowry
unleashes a mighty flood of his own to clean up the mess he finds,
enlisting the aid of 100 Power Mac G5 computers to render the
befouled film pristine.

2. Tips for Ten: Putting Your Mac on a Schedule
...............................................
Life is good. You walk through your office door at 8 sharp, and
you're greeted by your Mac, freshly booted and ready to get to work.
The ability to schedule your Mac to start up when you want it to
(weekdays, on the weekend, every day of the week, or only on
Tuesdays) is just one of the many conveniences Mac OS X v10.3,
"Panther" offers you.
And here's how easy it is put your Mac on a schedule.
* Open System Preferences and click Energy Saver.
* Click the Schedule tab.
* Click the checkbox next to "Start up the computer," select the
option you prefer in the pull-down menu, and set your preferred
startup time.
Give it a try.

3. Getting Smart with iPhoto
............................
Once the number of images in your iPhoto library climbs into the
thousands or tens of thousands, creating photo albums can grow
tedious and time consuming, and you're bound to miss some really
sweet photos in the process.
So why not let iPhoto do the work for you?
As easy as creating Smart Playlists in iTunes, Smart Albums lets you
define criteria iPhoto uses to find images and build an album
automatically. For example, "My Rating is * * * * *" lets iPhoto
know you want an album of your absolutely best photos. Meanwhile,
"Keyword is Hawaii," "Date is in the last 3 months," and "My Rating
is greater than * * *" finds the best photos from your recent
Hawaiian vacation.
Can you think of some Smart Albums you'd like iPhoto to create?

4. Get a Breath of "Fresh Air"
..............................
Political analysts, novelists, humorists, song writers, war
correspondents, epidemiologists, actors, politicians--if they have
an interesting story to tell, you're sure to hear it on Fresh Air.
Millions tune in to the award-winning radio show (airing on over 400
National Public Radio stations around the country) to hear Terry
Gross conduct her intelligent, witty and graceful interviews.
They're great to listen to in the car--in fact, how many times have
you sat in your car until one of the interviews completed?--and now
you don't have to wait until they come on the radio. That's because
the iTunes Music Store lets you choose from more than 800 shows.
Transfer the shows you purchase to iPod, and you'll enjoy Fresh Air
to go. Wherever and whenever you'd like.

5. What's New? Here's a Really Simple Way to Find Out.
......................................................
Like Hot News? One of the most popular pages on apple.com, Hot News
changes constantly. When we find news we think you'll enjoy, we add
it. We also regularly post new articles to the Knowledge Base. And
as new software titles come in, we update the Mac OS X Downloads
page.
How can you keep up with all of this activity? Use a news reader
(like the excellent NetNewsWire) and subscribe to a topic of
interest--e.g., the New Releases on the iTunes Music Store. The news
reader receives an RSS feed (short for Really Simple Syndication) on
a regular basis (every 30 minutes, every 4 hours, once a day),
letting you see at-a-glance when it's time to visit your favorite
web pages for a news infusion or the iTunes Music Store, where a
great new song awaits.

6. Letting Your Imagination Take Flight
.......................................
You have to be pretty special to sit in the pilot's seat of the
high flying, supersonic Concorde. As special as, let's say, you.
That's right you--and, okay, that dapper fellow beside you--can
explore the cockpit of one of the most important (and fastest)
commercial aircraft of all time.
The experience comes to us thanks to the Smithsonian National Air
and Space Museum, which recently opened a new facility housing
aircraft from the 40s to the 90s. Sorry, none yet from the aughts.
And much to the delight of the tourists flocking to the new aerial
exhibition, the Smithsonian has made the planes even more accessible
by letting us virtually climb inside almost all of them. QuickTime
VR technology supplies the magic, and you reap the rewards.

7. Technically Speaking
.......................
At Western Michigan University, the installation of Xserve servers
and the impressive capabilities of Mac OS X inspired the Department
of Art to refine their skills with some professional training.
The need to get up to speed on Mac OS X quickly and expertly also
transported the Texas Air National Guard into the classroom--even as
they prepared for deployment to the Middle East.
When the technical staff in Alaska's isolated Southwest Regional
School District needed to refine troubleshooting skills and receive
certification as Macintosh repair technicians, they also invested in
affordable, high-quality training.
And since they wanted to learn from the best instructors using
course materials tailored to their needs, they all contacted the
very same company.
