What you need to make web pages at home
-
Always be sure to save your HTML with the extension ".html". In class we used the name "index.html" but you can use "foo.html" or "bar.html" or whatever you want. Just be sure to use ".html" at the end of the file name, or you won't be able to see your web page correctly.
-
After you've saved your ".html" file to your desktop, drag it from your desktop ONTO a web browser window. This will allow you to see the results of your work.

I recommend using a very simple text editing program. SimpleText or BBEdit for the Macintosh are great, as are WordPad or NotePad for a Windows PC. A link for BBEdit is provided below, as are instructions for using WordPad/NotePad.
-
As a last resort, you can use Microsoft Word or almost any other word processor, you just must BE SURE TO SAVE YOUR DOCUMENTS AS TEXT ONLY. If you save it in any other format (like Microsoft's default format) it won't really be HTML and you won't be able to look at your work on a web browser.
-
If you're using a Macintosh, you'll use BBEdit Lite which is available for free. If you have SimpleText already on your machine, you can use that too. I couldn't find a link for SimpleText on the web and I'm not sure if Apple makes it freely available, so I can't post it here (yet). Sorry!
- If you're using a Windows PC, you should have WordPad or NotePad already installed. Go to your Start Menu (bottom left of the screen), Choose "All Programs", Choose "Accessories", and look for "NotePad" or "WordPad".
- Have fun!
